Sober In Seattle

Need ideas on how to have sober fun in Seattle? We got you covered! We have a variety of options for you ranging from comedy, movies, hiking, and more!

IMPROV

Turns out, you don’t need to be an actor to do Improv! A lot of people take improv (short for improvisation) classes with the simple intention of being a better communicator. Seattle improv welcomes all levels of experience, exploring the basics of storytelling through small group games and activities. Whether you want to step out of your comfort zone or get better at thinking on your feet, improv is a great place to meet people and have fun. Unexpected Productions or Jetcity Improv both have reasonably priced once-a-week class options. If you’re not sure which one to choose, there are drop-in classes for next to nothing ($10).

BIKE SHARE ACROSS THE CITY

Seattle has finally cleared the streets of the yellow and orange, allowing the LIME to shine! The company Lime is a bike share company that allows you to unlock and ride bikes through an easy-to-operate app on your smartphone. After many failed attempts at the bike share, Lime finally figured out what works; let people park them wherever they want! Stay sober, get a couple friends together and spend $10-20 dollars cruising Seattle’s designated bike lanes. The new and improved electric option lets you cruise from neighborhood to neighborhood with ease! Make a pitstop and grab a bee- soda along the way!

ESCAPE ROOMS

Have you ever had the urge to be trapped in a room with a zombie? Or perhaps stuck in a creepy morgue? With Halloween right around the corner, get in the spooky spirit with a team building experience that takes the classic haunted house to the next level. Seattle Escape Games has really hit the nail on the head with this thrilling group experience. Get together some friends or colleagues and put your minds to work using critical thinking and logic to solve puzzles as you seek to escape the eery prison cell you’ve always dreamed of being locked in.

BE A TOURIST

While you likely pride in your knowledge of the locals-only-hot-spots, it’s okay to be a tourist in your own home from time to time. Purchase the City Pass and choose up five local destinations including the Museum of Pop Culture or MoPop (formerly known as the EMP), the Seattle Aquarium and of course the iconic Space Needle. If you’re looking for something more “under” the radar, Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour provides a fun subterranean history of Seattle’s original neighborhood, Pioneer Square.

ART WALKS

Whether it’s every first Thursday of the month or every second Saturday, you can find rad art displays throughout different neighborhoods in the city. Explore local neighborhoods and support local artists at the same dang time! Expand your bubble, strike up conversations with strangers, compare perspectives! This one is about community, people! Though I suppose you could wander around with headphones and enjoy some PT as well.

READ

The key to better communication is reading and writing. That’s probably a fact. Now that all the temptation of summer activity has passed, it’s time to curl up with a good book at your favorite bookstore, library or cafe. Do some research, pick a book of the day and knock out a chapter or two. Walk away with something beneficial and that’s what we call a “little victory”.

ARCADE

Seattle is full of fun options if you want to channel your inner youth and geek out on arcade games. Local dive bar Add-A-Ball in Fremont is known to have the largest collection of vintage coin operated arcade games in the city, while Shorty’s in Belltown is the spot for classic pinball. Of course GameWorks is the chain arcade creme de la creme, presenting itself like a club on 20,000 square feet of downtown Seattle real estate.

Explore the Golden Larches in the Alpine Wilderness, or peruse the wild berry patches of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, the options are literally (almost) endless. If you’re looking to find some co-adventurers to charge up the side of a mountain with, Meetup is a great way to find like-minded fun seekers!

MOVIE NIGHT

As the temperature drops and the rain clouds roll in, there’s nothing like the cinema for a quick escape. Of course Seattle has the AMC’s and Regal Cinemas for the big blockbuster hits, but if you’re looking for something a little more intimate and cozy, check out Landmark Theatres to find that limited release independent film you’ve been itching to see. Crest Theater in Shoreline has a killer $3 dollar cinema that screens films after they’ve hit the big screens and before they’ve been released for digital distribution. If you’re quick on the draw, you can catch The Room screening on the last Thursday of every month at the iconic Central Cinema.
